What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is the name given to a metabolic disorder that occurs when the body cannot regulate blood glucose levels properly. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 and type 2.

In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas cannot produce insulin because the cells that actually make the insulin have been destroyed by the body’s own immune system. This insulin must be replaced. Therefore people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin everyday to live. Type 1 diabetes usually affects children and young adults and is the least common form of diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease and is strongly associated with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the classic “apple shape” body where there is extra weight around the waist. It is by far the most common form, affecting 85-90% of all people with diabetes. While it usually affects mature adults, more and more younger people, even children, are getting type 2 diabetes. Unlike those with type 1, people with type 2 diabetes are always insulin resistant. This means that their pancreas is making insulin but the insulin is not working as well as it should be. Eventually it can’t make enough to keep the glucose balance right

Sugar free and no added sugar. What is the difference?

What is the difference between SUGAR FREE and NO ADDED SUGAR?
In Australia , Food Standards Australia & New Zealand (FSANZ) is responsible for developing and administering the Code of practice on Nutrient Claims in Food.

As described in the Code:
Sugar Free, No Sugar, Zero Sugar means the food must not contain more than 0.2 g of sugars per 100 g of the food, or 0.1 g of sugars per 100 g of liquid foods.

Note: The policy of the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) in relation to the use of the term “free” is zero tolerance, irrespective of food regulations or codes of practice. Hence the existing “free” claims, which include small tolerance levels, are technically in breach of fair trading laws.

Many everyday foods proclaimed to be “Sugar Free”. These are carbonated & non-carbonated beverages, mints, hard candy, some desserts, pharmaceuticals & oral health products. No Added Sugar means that no sugar, or sugar containing ingredient;( including: dextrose, fructose, sucrose, lactose, starch hydrolysate, glucose syrups, maltodextrin and similar products, icing sugar, invert sugar, fruit sugar syrup, honey, malt, malt extract or maltose products, or products derived at a sugar refinery including brown sugar and molasses) is added to the food during processing. This food can still contain high amounts of natural sugars. Typically, foods marked with “No Added Sugar” will have a low Glycemic Index, meaning they do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels.

Foods marked with “No Added Sugar” can include chocolates, fruit bars, sauces, alcoholic drinks, desserts, jams, preserves & marmalades, cereals & mueslis, biscuits, and dairy products. If a product is labelled as being Low in Sugar, they must not contain more than 5 g total sugars per 100 g of the food, or 2.5 g total sugars per 100 g of liquid food.
